Your Workout's Missing This One Thing (Hint: It's Fun!)
Yesterday I talked about and clarified functional fitness and shared a couple of lifts from my current program that I'm loving right now.
Today I want to follow it up with a fun weekend reminder that every fitness journey can and should have time for play included!
Every Build with Becky workout closes with suggestions for play and cooldown, and it's probably no surprise that I've gotten a lot of my most fun and exciting PR's during these unstressed, enjoyable moments:
- ✨ my first chin-up
- ✨ a surprise headstand
- ✨ the band-assisted muscle-up I never thought I’d get
I usually tack on ~10 minutes of play at the end of a lift — it helps me finish on a high note and keeps me excited to come back. But I’ll also switch it up sometimes:
- ✅Add it to the start of a workout when I’m dragging
- ✅ Sprinkle it throughout to stay engaged on low-energy days
The only rule about play in your workouts is: there are no rules! It's about choosing something you want to do, just because!
For kids, play is how they explore and grow — self-directed, imaginative, energizing. They’re active and alert, but not stressed; in fact they often find themselves in a state of flow. Sounds kind of magical, right? 💫
So next time you’re counting reps and feeling blah, try asking:
What would feel FUN right now?
A new machine? A yoga pose? Something you saw on Instagram?
Then try it. See what happens. Give yourself permission to explore.
You’re not just allowed to enjoy your fitness… it’s the whole point. 💛
