Learning Lately: Recommended Reads on Longevity, Aging, and Healthspan

📚The past couple of weeks I’ve been reading these two books side by side, and they make a fascinating pair!

Being Mortal by Atul Gawande explores how the medicalization of aging and dying can sometimes rob us of dignity and meaning at the end of life. It’s deeply reflective on how we care for our elders, how we face death as families, and what we might want for ourselves when that time comes. Big thanks to my new friend Imee, who I met at Just for Fun recently, for recommending it!

Outlive by Peter Attia, on the other hand, focuses on extending not just lifespan, but healthspan—the quality of our years, not just the quantity. He challenges us to rethink modern medicine, shifting from reactive care to proactive strategies that delay or avoid chronic diseases like heart disease, Alzheimer’s, and metabolic dysfunction.

Reading these together has been eye-opening—one book centered on how we approach the end of life, and the other on how to improve the years leading up to it. It’s the perfect prelude to the Healthy Aging Conference I’ll be attending in May, hosted by the Stanford Lifestyle Medicine and The Stanford Longevity Project.
